HHS difficulties with blog effort

Filed under: Government, blogging — kirk @ 6:03 am

Sometimes you can run into problems with a government blog.
Health and Human Services got the idea (and even the initial execution) right. However, it sounds like they failed to follow through when it came to providing timely, helpful posts based on input to their blog. Even with the conflict, it seems that the HHS blog is doing a good job of providing direct communication between top HHS officials and the public.
It also looks like they’re dealing with some people wanting to cause their blog some grief.

  1. I applaud anyone in the government who sets up a blog and deals with the nature of the blogosphere - the demands of honesty, transparency and thoughtful engagement shouldn’t ever be too much for departments to endure.

I was heartened in April when I gave the pre-conference blogging workship at a conference on blogging and social networking in Chicago and many of the attendees were from government offices.

Thank you, Kirk, for carrying the torch and pointing out those who’ve led the way in terms of dealing with conflict and grief.

  2. Thank you Janet.

I also feel the need to add this note in a comment. I think HHS has taken a great approach in doing the blogging that they do. My blog post here was meant to point out the difficulties they’ve encountered. I’m going to continue to follow what HHS is doing with this approach.
